Language can link kids beyond frontiers

Good evening.
As you know,October is considered (at school) to be a month to raise some money for those countries whose kids are deprived of their basic rights.
There was a campaign last week to raise awareness of the importance of cooperation.
English is a language and,therefore,the means to relate to kids all over the world.
That is the reason why kids in 4° have started writing two letters to send them to two girls who suffered devastation after the floodings in Haiti,a few years ago.They are also 9 like them and we will send those letters as soon as we finish them next week.We are all sure they will make them smile when they get them.

Halloween

Welcome to this blog after a long break.

Halloween is here at last and as I do every single year,I'll give my view on it.

I was raised into a generation to which Halloween was something only to be seen in American films of the late 70s and 80s.

However,I was lucky enough as to end up living in Northern Ireland,where the Halloween tradition as an evolution of the Shamáin Celtic festival is supposed to have been originated at first.

Halloween is not an American tradition but one the Irish immigrants brought into the States.

I learned about all that during my stay near Londonderry (or Derry) for Halloween.When you walk through fields,next to graves in churches in the city centre,covered by the mist and with ravens as pedestrians,waiting on traffic lights posts to cross the road,then Halloween makes sense.

Therefore,I do not believe in the "imported" Halloween through mass media but in that ancient festival Celts were fond of.

I'll stick to gachas and buñuelos,what really makes sense to me in my culture.

Dear readers,
We are going to write about how to surf the internet in a safe way.
First of all, when we use the internet, we should surf carefully.
Then,when we should always cover our camera with a sticker.
Besides,it is okay if you need to check for some information that you need for
your career.
We shouldn´t post our passwords in the internet.
However, we should surf in websites which are good for our age.
You can write jokes in the internet and express your opinion,but without
insulting others.
Remember!!!!!Never write down your name, surname, address, passwords or
plans in the internet. You shouldn´t upload photos of you and your family
without your parents´permission. And remember!!!you shouldn´t talk to people
you don´t know.

Hi!
All our kids are doing better than fine in our weekly project about places in town.
We are really happy to announce that electricity came to town!!!!!
I guess I'll book a table in a cosy restaurant!

If I want to go for some healthy food, I´ll buy some fruit and then, when I end up tired of exploring the city and of learning about fish in the aquarium, I´ll go to sleep in a nice hotel. It sounds good, doesn´t it?

A cualquier persona que opta por estudiar alguna Filología, la lectura siempre nos marca la infancia.
En mi caso, mis primeros recuerdos como lectora van unidos a Los Cinco,de Enid Blyton.Los comencé a leer desordenados pero, mi mejor recuerdo sobre ellos se remonta a una mañana de Reyes..me echaron "Los Cinco y el Tesoro de la Isla". Era el primero de la colección y,junto con "Los Cinco en las Rocas del Diablo" y "Los Cinco en la caravana" era el que nos faltaba para completarla.
Un libro que me leí hasta perder la cuenta fue "El Mundo Perdido" de Arthur Conan Doyle (autor de Sherlock Holmes).
También "Viaje al Centro de la Tierra" de Julio Verne,además de "El Rayo Verde".
Las andanzas de los "Hombrecitos" (secuela de "Mujercitas" de Louise May Alcott) también me robó horas de sueño.
Sin embargo,mis lecturas de la biblioteca de colegio y de los "Barco de Vapor" me llevaron a leer por primera vez sobre la Guerra Civil de Estados Unidos en el siglo XIX.Era una novela llamada "Norte y Sur", que,casualmente se emitía en la versión adulta en la televisión por aquella época.
Pero la novela que despertó mi pasión por el Inglés se la debo a mi profesora de BUP: Rocío.
Nos mandó leer "Jane Eyre" de Charlotte Brontë.Ese personaje tan marcado, el señor Rochester tan atormentado y los páramos de Yorkshire me impactaron de tal forma que me lo leí en la versión adaptada a mi edad y,con los años,en la versión Unabridged (tal y como fue escrita).
Ya con 11 años oí hablar del Rey Arturo y los Caballeros que buscaban el Santo Grial.
..Avalon,Morgana,Lancelot...
Fue en la serie Ana de las Tejas Verdes (Anne of Green Gables), basada en una novela de Lucy Maud Montgomery. En ella,Anne Shirley (la protagonista) era una lectora fanática,casi obsesiva del poema The Lady of Shalott (de Alfred Lord Tennyson,autor sagrado para la Filología Inglesa y el Ciclo Artúrico).
Escuchándola recitar en español (en aquella época la tele no podía cambiarse de idioma),me quedé con aquello de "Y teje de día y de noche una tela mágica de vivos colores.Y ha escuchado decir que una maldición caerá sobre ella si se queda contemplando Camelot.Y muy pocas cuitas tiene ella: la Dama de Shalott".
Creo que en aquella época comencé a descubrir cuál sería mi futuro:relacionado con la lectura y un idioma:el Inglés.
Mi homenaje a las letras no españolas es The Lady of Shalott de Tennyson.
Os adjunto la banda sonora de aquella serie de esa chica obsesionada con la Dama y el poema en sí (largo y en Middle English en las terminaciones verbales.La métrica de los versos es la conocida como Iambic Pentameter o Pentámetro Iámbico).

Our kids are having a great time getting their shops, hospital, pet shop, restaurants ready...
The idea is that they become familiar with how to welcome costumers and communicate efficiently in those situations.
