DID YOU KNOW THAT...
in the past, Saturday and Sunday were the days of Saturn and the Sun.
Then in Spanish they changed the name but, in other languages it is kept.
It would be horrible to live in Mercury:
You would burn or you would freeze!!!
Venus was the name of the Roman Goddess of beauty and love and Mars was the name of the war.
Jupiter is the biggest planet from the Solar System and it´s eleven times bigger than the Earth.
During a lot of time, we thought that Saturn had two rings but when we could send spaceships, we saw that it really had thousands of individual rings.
If you could Uranus and Neptune in your bath they would float!!!

Problema matemático desde Italia

Hola a todos.
Escribo en español para llegar a más lectores.
Hoy tenemos ya el problema matemático que nos envía nuestro colegio italiano asociado al proyecto.
Los niños le darán respuesta con sus profesores de matemáticas de 5° y 6° y traducirán el planteamiento conmigo para hacerlo llegar a los demás socios
(República Checa y Reino Unido).
Armando ya está creando su propio enigma matemático ilustrado.
En cuanto su seño de matemáticas le dé el visto bueno lo publicaré.
Así, los colegios asociados nos enviarán la solución y cómo han llegado a ella.

Plymouth Calling!

Esta mañana hemos tenido el inmenso privilegio de recibir en 6°A a una profesora muy especial.

Enseña matemáticas en Secundaria en un centro educativo de Plymouth (Reino Unido) y es la hermana de uno de nuestros alumnos.

Siempre es enriquecedor recibir a colegas profesores y,aún más cuando están ligados a nuestro colegio,como es el caso de Irene.

Les ha acercado a nuestros chicos la realidad de las diferencias entre los colegios a nivel europeo,comentando aspectos organizativos del suyo tales como el horario de 9 a 4 de la tarde, la costumbre de realizar "Briefings" cada semana a modo de asamblea y algo tan costumbrista como el gusto por el té a todas horas.

Cualquiera que haya vivido en Reino Unido entenderá lo bonito y nostálgico de poder dar clases como la de hoy.

Irene ha propuesto dos juegos con la finalidad de procesar información de fuentes reales e intentar imaginar a partir de textos publicitarios.

Estamos seguros de que realiza una labor docente excelente en su centro de Plymouth,puesto que hoy ya hemos podido constatarlo en nuestra clase.

It has been a great way to start our lessons today!

Irene,a school kid's sister and a teacher herself has popped into our class to talk about how schools are in Plymouth,where she teaches Maths.

She has made kids take part in the chat and she has played a couple of games to make them focus on words and how to infer some information from brochures.

We appreciate she devoted some time to go to school and say hello to our kids.

We are sure she is a great teacher to 

those British kids.

We have been so lucky to enjoy her lesson today!

We love our projects!

Our kids in 5° are loving their projects so far.

We are working about Maths with schools from the Czech Republic,Italy,UK and other Spanish schools so far!

They learn Maths using several methods.

We do it with ABN.

En nuestro primer día en las jornadas de formación: 'Learning to Think in a Digital Society' en Atenas se nos ha aproximado a los retos de la educación propuestos para 2020.
La Comisión Europea centra los esfuerzos en minimizar las fracturas institucionales mediante el apoyo al profesorado como herramientas para potenciar el liderazgo y maximizar los estándares de cualidad real,entendidos como el métod para que los nativos digitales piensen en todos los ámbitos.
Mrs Anne Gilleran, responsable pedagógica de e-Twinning enfatiza que el pensamiento aborda facetas comunes al origen de los tiempos,aunque con unos retos actuales más complejos.
El pensamiento computacional se encauza en la prioridad del trabajo colectivo como la manera de abordar problemas cotidianos,llevando el pensamiento innato del ser humano a la brillantez de su acción concreta.
Los procesos de pensamiento y habilidades de análisis se enfocan al pensamiento autónomo,lejos de la mera adquisición de conocimientos.
El director de Computación del Medialab, Michail Bletsas abordó la historia de la programación y consecución del Media Lab a raiz de la vocación del profesor y matemático Seymour Papert en la década de los 70 en Estados Unidos.Él fue el primero en llevar el uso de los sistemas informáticos a las aulas,inspirando asi el proyecto encauzado por Bletsas de One Laptop per Child a principios del siglo XXI.
Este proyecto llevó los primeros portátiles (operados sin electricidad y con batería que se cargaba con un sistema de palanca) a lugares tan desfavorecidos como Sri Lanka,Perú,Camboya...
Hoy abordaremos talleres específicos de diversa índole,enfocados a la aplicación práctica en el aula.

Computational Thinking. Athens, 28-30 September

Dear families,
I will be away from school from Wednesday to Monday due to my trip
to Athens.

As you know, I have been creating and developing several projects with other European
schools since 2011, and as a result I have been awarded with a Quality Label that has
granted me the opportunity
to apply for a grant.
I was selected to attend several lectures about "Computational Thinking" in Athens
next week.

I have already planned next week lessons so that your kids can feel I am there with
 them even
though I will be abroad.

Cancer knows NO frontiers

Hola a todos.
No acostumbro a usar el blog para cuestiones ajenas al inglés pero esta iniciativa es importante.
Hace años que un amigo mío de mi etapa norirlandesa superó un cáncer.
Ha organizado una actividad con sus alumnos para recaudar fondos para la asociación contra el cáncer (potenciar la investigación) en UK.
Esa enfermedad no entiende de fronteras y opino que cualquier aportación es necesaria,independientemente del país donde se resida.

20th April

Today is a day for letters.
My kids in 3°B have started writing a letter to their former classmate (Mary Margaret).
We'll post it next week so,please buy an envelope and a stamp for the US.
I was tempted to start it with "Hola,chata" but I guess it wouldn't have been professional...
They were so excited about the idea of getting in touch with her that they couldn't stop asking questions!
They will be revising how to write  a letter in Spanish tomorrow with their teacher

The Lady of Shalott and Poetry in Primary

So today was the day,

our students let it play,

an outstanding burden of poems

came out bursting from the stems.

Running all the way,

our kids made them stay

in a fellow mate´  s brain,
as a shower of spring rain.

Os adjunto el vídeo de la dramatización del poema 'The Lady of Shalott' de Alfred L.Tennyson,emblema de la poesía de la Inglaterra Victoriana, trabajado, declamado y cantado por 6ºA y con la colaboración especial de Sofía, de 6°B representando a la Dama de Shalott.

Our students in Primary have devoted several days to reading and even writing some poems as a way to take part in those activities promoted by the Spanish Language Department.

Our little ones in 1º and 2º have enjoyed some songs and phonetics (tongue-twisters) in which rhyme is the main core of the texts.

3º has started writing poetry in English with some amazing outcome, such as Rafa´s:

"I play Pokémon Go,

but my level´s so low..."

We also watched a poem about a tired and depressed bee that lost its zest...

4º has done some research about some poets like Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, W.B. Yeats, William Shakespeare´s sonnets...

Their projects can be seen hanging on the school corridors and their portraits of such poets are to be watched in detail.

6º has dealt with the poem by Alfred L. Tennyson "The Lady of Shalott".

Some groups in A have learn some bits of the poem as the song Lorena McKennit sang. Some others have become Medieval scriveners, imitating those letters in ancient manuscripts.

Some others made some presentation with the paintings about the LAdy of Shalott that can be seen in some British museums.

Sofía, from 6ºB played the role of the Lady of Shalott while some other kids in 6ºA sang and read the poem in several classes in Primary.

6ºB has developed their creativity when writing some poems in English.

All in all, we felt challenged by poetry during several days, making it possible to start playing with words in another language to find our own inner voice.

Saint Patrick's Day

Nada mejor para homenajear a mi otro hogar (Irlanda) que comentar lo orgullosa que estoy de quien fuera alumno mío de bachillerato de español en su colegio de aquellas tierras.
Ya entonces tocaba el acordeón delante de cientos de personas.
Acaba de lanzar su primer cd de música folk de raíces puramente norirlandesas.Escuchar una canción  suya me transporta directamente a los preciosos bosques de abetos de su pueblo natal.
Escuchadle,os encantará.
Infinitamente orgullosa de mi Matt :)

Poetry Week

Since next week we'll devote some lessons to poetry (Spanish and Foreign Languages), my kids in 6° have already gone back in time to deal with the Victorian Era and one of its poems, "The Lady of Shalott" by Tennyson.
We'll deal with it in depth as well as sing it (some of the kids)

11M y Omagh

Cada año publico esta foto en el blog.
El 11M para mi se desarrollo así:
Recuerdo que estaba casi lista para ir al colegio católico de Omagh a dar clase de español a mis chicos de Bachillerato.
Ciara,mi compañera de casa aquel año me llamó desde el salón.
"Come to the living room!Some awful news from Madrid.13 victims so far...it seems to be a train crash"
En la BBC aparecía la imagen congelada de un tren.Hablaban de una cifra estimada de 13 víctimas.Aún no eran ni las 9 de la mañana en UK.
Me fui al colegio con el corazón encogido.
En la pausa para el té de las 10:45,llamé a España desde la cabina de la sala de profesores.
Mi madre no podía decirme mucho más.Todo era desconcertante.
El profesor de Irlandés me comentó que ya se hablaba de más de 80 víctimas.
El Departamento de Español organizó una oración en la capilla al día siguiente.
El alumnado completo rezó por las víctimas y realizamos un minuto de silencio a las 12 (las 11 hora de Omagh).
El alcalde y Michael Gallagher,cuyo hijo fue asesinado en la bomba de Omagh (15/8/98) ,junto a 30 víctimas más (la cifra oficial fueron 29 personas pero,-una de ellas estaba embarazada de gemelos y se exigió que la cifra real reconocida fuera de 31 víctimas mortales-)  organizaron un acto de apoyo a los españoles que estábamos alli (una chica de Burgos y yo y,casualmente esa semana un grupo de estudiantes de Estética de Asturias).
Nos sentimos apoyadas por los habitantes de Omagh y nos ayudaron a ir encajando la incertidumbre de no saber el porqué (imposible llegar a comprender el terrorismo) .
Por eso, cada 11M cuento esto porque es mi humilde homenaje a las víctimas y la muestra de agradecimiento a aquella ciudad de Omagh (Irlanda del Norte) que conforta de forma genuina a aquellos pueblos atacados por terroristas (como les lleva ocurriendo a ellos desde hace tantos años).
Compré este periódico con la intención de seguir teniendo un testimonio en papel para siempre del gran corazón de los habitantes de Omagh.Aquella semana crecí a nivel personal y comprendí lo que es la humanidad de forma genuina y sincera entre los pueblos.
Nuestro recuerdo para tantas víctimas,sus familias y los profesionales sanitarios,psicólogos de emergencias,policías,bomberos,militares,voluntarios,vecinos...que dieron todo por coordinarse y ayudar en momentos tan difíciles de abordar para cualquier ser humano.

Me han enviado un resumen de actividad.Hay una media de 14 alumnos que usan la plataforma por clase.
